Fashionable prints - fashion prints (1580-1940) from the Private collection Ghering
November 27th 2011 - February 19th 2012
In the exhibition 'Fashionable prints - fashion prints (1580-1940) from the Private collection Ghering' we'll show about 70 unique fashion prints, mostly from the period 1580 to 1940, but with the exception of a current fashion print by the Dutch fashion illustrator Piet Paris.
In the prints you cannot only see the development of fashion over the years but also the development of printing techniques. From engravings to mezzotints and lithography. Not only the fashion changed drastically over the years, also the way the way the fashion was shown. At first without any background at all and by the roaring twenties the latest car models and trains showed up in the prints. In the thirties photography took over and the prints slowly dissapeared, but in the 21st century we can see a return of the fashion illustration.
Besides the fashion prints we'll show a few historical costumes and some accessories, like shoes from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. During the exhibition period we'll organize lectures, workshops and activities.
